Just when you think you have learned everything there is to learn about foaling, you stumble across something new . . . something kind of weird!

Spring is coming and that means foaling time is here. The stalls are bedded down, everything is ready and all that is left is the wait. We often spend this time pondering whether the new arrival will be a filly or colt or what color he or she will be. If this is your first foaling experience, you have probably spent a great deal of time studying the foaling process in order to familiarize yourself with what is normal and what is not. If, on the other hand, this is just another foaling season like so many before, past experience has taught you what to expect and how to handle the unexpected. But no matter how many foals the experienced horseman has seen come into the world, he sometimes stumbles onto something that is a complete mystery, something he has never seen before. Or perhaps, as in my case, you run across some peculiar and all together unfamiliar piece of information in the pages of a book.
